Door size guide. Measure once, order right.

How to measure the door you have, the standard sizes we carry, and which type of door suits which job.

Will it fit? Measure once, order right.

Measure the door you are replacing (the door itself, not the frame) in millimetres. We show the sizes we stock that fit.

Tip: measure the width at the top, middle and bottom and use the largest. Most South African single doors are 813 x 2032 mm.

How to measure. Three numbers, in millimetres.

  1. Width

Measure the door across the top, the middle and the bottom. Use the largest number.

  2. Height

Measure from top to bottom on the hinge side and on the handle side. Use the largest number.

  3. Thickness

Measure the edge of the door. Most doors are 40 or 44 mm thick; it matters for hinges and locks.

Fitting a new frame or a new opening? Measure the rough opening in the wall as well and tell us which you measured. The frame and the door need a little gap to fit and swing.

Sizes we carry. Straight from our catalogue.

Hollow, semi solid or solid?

Hollow core
A light frame with a honeycomb core between two skins. Light and affordable, for bedrooms, bathrooms and cupboards inside the house.
Semi solid
A heavier filled core that feels more solid and blocks more sound. A semi exterior door should not stand fully exposed to the weather: fit it under a roof overhang or a stoep.
Solid
Solid timber or a solid core. The heaviest and most secure choice, and the usual pick for front and back doors.

Which way should it open?

Pivot doors
Turn on a pivot set in from the edge instead of hinges, so a wide, heavy door opens easily. Our pivot doors are mostly 1288 x 2120 mm.
Barn doors and sliders
Slide along a track over the opening, so they need no swing space. Good where a hinged door would hit furniture.
Bi-folding doors
Fold in half as they open, for cupboards and tight passages.
Stable doors
Split across the middle, so the top half can open on its own for light and air.

Not a standard size? We make doors to measure.

Send us the size and a photo or sketch: grooves, non-standard heights, bi-folds or a full trade order. We will price it and tell you the lead time.
